VIOLA – Vertically Integrated Optical Testbed for Large Applications in the German Research Network
VIOLA is a research project of multiple partners from universities, research centres, industrial companies and the DFN („Verein zur Förderung eines Deutschen Forschungsnetzes e.V."). VIOLA is funded by the German ministry for research and education. The main objectives of VIOLA are the test of advanced network architectures, development of software for user-driven dynamical provision of bandwidth, and test of advanced applications in the VIOLA Grid environment.
SCAI is contributing to VIOLA in the following areas:
• VIOLA-SUPPORT
The objective of the VIOLA-SUPPORT subproject is to build a compute Grid based on the Grid-middleware UNICORE, furthermore to operate this Grid and to provide it to the VIOLA applications. To reach this objective additional work in the areas of scheduling and MPI communication has to be performed. Using the real scientific applications AMG-OPT (solving problems of structural mechanics) and TechSim (simulation of crystal growth in silicon) the performance of the VIOLA-Grid in a realistic environment shall be demonstrated.
• AMG-OPT (working area numerical software)
