From Big Data to Smart Knowledge – Text and Data Mining in Science and Economy

Press Release /

The concepts of big data, smart knowledge, text mining and data mining have be-come firmly embedded in the scientific and research communities and are playing an increasingly important role in people's everyday work. The international conference »From Big Data to Smart Knowledge – Text and Data Mining in Science and Economy« (February 23 and 24, Hyatt Regency Cologne) will be focusing on these topics with a number of presentations by top-class keynote speakers from around the world. Registration for the conference is now open at www.textminingconference.de.

The conference will examine a number of issues that information centres and libraries will need to address in the future, such as: How can we assist and support people in using scientific information beyond simply providing access to PDF files? How can unstructured data be used in ways that go beyond ‘traditional’ acts such as reading texts and watching films? And how can future-oriented library services utilise text and data mining to support research in the fields of science and engineering, life sciences, and economics?

These are just some of the topics that will be discussed at the international conference at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Cologne. With a carefully chosen selection of presentations by international experts and researchers from industry and the academic community, the conference will present the current state of research in the field of text and data mining and provide insights into how these tools may develop in the future.

This event is organised by Goportis – Leibniz Library Network of Research Information in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing SCAI.

Location: Hyatt Regency Cologne, Kennedy-Ufer 2A, 50679 Cologne, Germany

Start date/time: 23 February 2015, 1:00 pm

Background information:

Goportis – Leibniz Library Network for Research Information

Goportis is the name of the Leibniz Library Network for Research Information which consists of the three German National Libraries TIB (National Library of Science and Technology, Hanover), ZB MED (Leibniz Information Centre for Life Sciences, Cologne/Bonn), and ZBW (National Library of Economics – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics, Kiel/Hamburg). The three partners work together to support scientific working processes by providing research-based services, for ex-ample by opening up access to research data, developing virtual research environments and semantic applications, and offering various other types of assistance.

Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing SCAI

The Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing SCAI conducts research in the field of computer simulations for product and process development, and is a prominent corporate partner in the industrial and science sectors. SCAI designs and optimizes industrial applications, implements custom solutions for production and logistics, and offers calculations on high-performance computers. Our services are based on industrial engineering, combined with state-of-the-art methods from applied mathematics and information technology. SCAI especially excels in coupled simulation of different physical disciplines, and develops software for visualization of calculation results. In bioinformatics, SCAI offers workflow-oriented and integrated IT infrastructures for information extraction. SCAI has accumulated specialized expertise in both structured storing and administration of data and research results, and in the organization of projects.
