Christian Kirchsteiger is responsible within the European Commission's Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CNECT) for initiatives in relation to developing convergent European HPC, cloud and AI infrastructures. He holds a PhD in Physics and was, before joining the European Commission in 1996, working in industry and research in South Africa, Japan and Germany in the areas of nuclear safety and energy systems modelling. From 1996-2002 he was employed at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in Ispra/Italy, dealing with chemical and nuclear safety assessment in support of EU policy services. From 2002-2006, he was head of sector on comparative safety and sustainability assessment of different energy technologies and infrastructures at the EU Joint Research Centre in Petten/Netherlands. From 2007-2017, he worked for the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER) in Luxembourg to develop more integrated nuclear safety, security and safeguards policies.
