About SCAI

Dedication to the Future

The Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing SCAI combines know-how in mathematical and computational methods with a focus on the development of innovative algorithms and their take-up in industrial practice – bringing benefits to customers and partners.

SCAI‘s research fields in Computational Science include machine learning and data analysis, optimization, multiphysics, energy network evaluation, virtual material design, multiscale methods, high performance computing, and computational finance.

In the field of bioinformatics, SCAI offers its customers comprehensive services in information extraction (text mining). Here, the most important application field is the modelling of neurodegenerative diseases.

Connections to university research are established through the chair of Prof. Dr. Michael Griebel at the University of Bonn. SCAI also cooperates with the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (B-IT) and the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.

The annual budget of Fraunhofer SCAI was around 15 million euros in 2020. The networking in national and international research projects ensures the alignment of offers with leading standards.

Academic Partnership

Via the chair of the institute director Prof. Dr. Michael Griebel, Fraunhofer SCAI maintains close relations with the University of Bonn,

SCAI also cooperates with the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (B-IT) and the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. The B-IT is a joint institution of the University of Bonn, the RWTH Aachen, the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University and the institutes of the Fraunhofer Institute Center Schloss Birlinghoven.

Fraunhofer Groups and Alliances

Cooperation and bundling competences are very important strategies in Fraunhofer Research and Development.

Each Fraunhofer institute belongs to one of 7 Fraunhofer groups, in which the institutes working in related subject areas are organized. Fraunhofer SCAI is a member of the Fraunhofer Information and Communication Technology Group.

The Fraunhofer Alliances facilitate customer access to the services and research results of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Common points of contact for groups of institutes active in related fields provide expert advice on complex issues and coordinate the development of appropriate solutions. Fraunhofer SCAI is an active member of three Fraunhofer Alliances:

Fraunhofer Institute Center Schloss Birlinghoven

Fraunhofer SCAI is part of the Fraunhofer Institute Center Schloss Birlinghoven (IZB). IZB is one of the largest research locations for mathematics and computer science in Germany.
