About SCAI

Dedication to the Future

The Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing SCAI conducts research in the fields of computational science, optimization and bioinformatics, and is a prominent corporate partner in the industrial and science sectors.

SCAI designs and optimizes industrial applications, implements custom solutions for production and logistics, and offers calculations on high-performance computers. Our services are based on industrial engineering, combined with state-of-the-art methods from applied mathematics and information technology.

SCAI especially excels in coupled simulation of different physical disciplines, and develops software for visualization of calculation results.

In the field of machine learning, Fraunhofer SCAI develops new intelligent methods and adapts data analysis methods to specific application cases. SCAI picks up, structures and integrates the knowledge available to users into mathematical or semantic concepts that are incorporated as domain knowledge into data-driven models.

In bioinformatics, Fraunhofer SCAI offers its customers comprehensive services in the field of information extraction (text mining) and in the field of applied chemical informatics. One application focus here is the modeling of neurodegenerative diseases.

The annual budget of Fraunhofer SCAI is around 11 million euros. The networking in national and international research projects ensures the alignment of offers with leading standards.

Academic Partnership

Via the chair of the institute director Prof. Dr. Michael Griebel, Fraunhofer SCAI has close relationships to the University of Bonn,

SCAI also cooperates with the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (B-IT) and the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. The B-IT is a joint institution of the University of Bonn, the RWTH Aachen, the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University and the institutes of the Fraunhofer Institute Center Schloss Birlinghoven.

Fraunhofer Groups and Alliances

Cooperation and bundling competences are very important strategies in Fraunhofer Research and Development.

Each Fraunhofer institute belongs to one of 7 Fraunhofer groups, in which the institutes working in related subject areas are organized. Fraunhofer SCAI is a member of the Fraunhofer Information and Communication Technology Group.

The Fraunhofer Alliances facilitate customer access to the services and research results of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Common points of contact for groups of institutes active in related fields provide expert advice on complex issues and coordinate the development of appropriate solutions. Fraunhofer SCAI is an active member of three Fraunhofer Alliances:

Fraunhofer Institute Center Schloss Birlinghoven

Fraunhofer SCAI is part of the Fraunhofer Institute Center Schloss Birlinghoven (IZB). IZB is one of the largest research locations for mathematics and computer science in Germany.
