Informatics and Numerics for Weather and Climate Simulation
SCAI researchers apply the algorithmic and numeric knowledge of the department to questions of numeric weather prediction and climate simulation. Part of the method spectrum are:
- Stability analysis of time step methods
- Location discretisations with special conservation properties
- Development of advection methods for climate relevant chemical trace elements in the atmosphere
With modern IT technologies, complex, coupled climate models can be controlled interactively, and at the same time the results can be visualised via a graphical user interface. Parallelisation and optimisation of algorithms, coupling of model components (e.g. atmosphere, ocean, sea ice) and the use of parallel applications on different computer systems are standard tasks.
